WhatsApp is improving group conversations by adding user mentions, letting members tag specific people and ensure messages don’t get lost in busy chats.
WhatsApp has introduced user mentions in group chats, a long-requested feature aimed at making conversations easier to follow in busy groups.
With the update, users can now mention specific participants in a group chat to directly grab their attention, similar to how mentions work in apps like Telegram, Slack, or Discord.
How WhatsApp mentions work
To mention someone in a group chat, users simply type the “@” symbol followed by the contact’s name. WhatsApp then shows a list of group members to select from.
Once mentioned:
- the tagged user receives a highlighted notification
- the mention stands out visually in the chat
- the message is harder to miss in high-traffic groups
This is especially useful in large group chats where important messages often get buried under ongoing conversation.
Why this “Group chats” feature matters
Group chats are one of WhatsApp’s most popular features, but they can quickly become overwhelming — especially in work, school, or community groups.
User mentions help by:
- directing messages to specific people
- reducing confusion about who needs to respond
- improving coordination in group discussions
Instead of replying with vague messages like “Can someone handle this?”, users can now clearly address the right person.
Privacy and notification behavior
WhatsApp keeps mentions relatively lightweight. Only the mentioned user receives a stronger notification, while other participants see the message as usual.
The feature does not expose usernames publicly beyond existing contact names, and it works within WhatsApp’s existing privacy and encryption model.
The mentions feature is rolling out gradually on Android and iOS, and availability may depend on having the latest version of the app installed.
WhatsApp typically enables new features server-side, so some users may see it appear without a full app update.
User mentions may seem like a small addition, but they solve a real problem in crowded group chats. It’s a practical quality-of-life improvement — and another sign that WhatsApp is steadily borrowing the best ideas from modern messaging platforms while keeping its interface simple.
